Just in - Brief Tour of Japan Preview

With a nice mix of local and International UCI teams the 2010 Tour of Japan looks set to be an exciting contest.
After a strong showing in the recent Presidency Turkey Tour the DE ROSA -STAC PLASTIC Team from Italy look well placed to feature in the results. Sprinter Claudio Cucinotta, a former National Amateur Champ, will be suited by the earlier stages after a podium finish behind Andre Greipel in Turkey, however Cristiano Salerno excellent climbing in that tour would suggest he is one to watch for the overall after finishing 5th overall in the International Presidency Turkey Tour 2010 behind strong Italian Giovanni Visconti.

British champion Kristian House’s Rapha Condor Sharp Team, also looks strong with Darren Lapthorne, Zak Dempster, Dean Windsor and Dean Downing all recent podium finishers in Asia. The only blow to the team being Tom Southam injury in the Lincoln GP which has ruled him out of Japan’s tour.

Maybe the favourite to lead the tour early is outstanding Australian youngster Michael Matthews who impressed with 2 stage wins early in the year at Langkawi, but continues to impress coming second in the GP Liberazione, on the 25th April behind Jan Tratnik.

Kazakhstan brings a tough team to Japan with experienced Japanese performer Dmitriy Gruzdev (2nd in stage 2 in 2009),  and Roman Zhiyentayev, a stage winner and holder of the yellow jersey in the Tour of Taiwan last year before slipping to third overall. Dmitriy and Roman just 2 of the strong team that will face the starter on the weekend.

Of Course the Asian UCI teams and their riders are starting to gain a solid following with Aisan’s Japanese National Champion Taiji Nishitani (who won a stage at Langkawi in march) and team mate Takeaki Ayabe expected to perform well. As too Geumsan Ginseng leader Shinichi Fukushima has been featuring on the podium in the tour of Japan since 1999, he too is in form with a stage placing in the tour de Taiwan in March. Plus we can’t leave out Hong Kong’s star and former world champ Kam Po Wong. While Asian Continental teams - Champion Systems, Letua, Bridgestone Anchor, Shimano and Nippo will all enter strong teams

Rapha Condor Sharp very much focusing on Darren Lapthorne in these early stages of the Tour of Japan, to make sure he is in a good position if he has the legs in the tougher stages to come...
