2010 Jayco Bay Cycling Classic, January 2nd -5th
STAGE 1:
The big sprinters fought out stage 1 of the Geelong Bay Cycling Classic today with
defending champ Graeme Brown with the assistance of his Urban Hotel team powering
away from the flying Matty Goss and superstar Robbie McEwen.
Raced around the 2km Botanic Gardens course the fast men had their day, with Brown
kicking quite early after nice work from the Urban Team to record a clear win over
Goss, McEwen and Chris Sutton.
It was a good day for the Urban Hotel team with Brown taking the Yellow Leaders Jersey
and team mate Mitch Docker finishing with the Green Sprints jersey after he, Brown
and Mal Rudolph (Jayco Skins) one the three sprints.

STAGE 3:
The classic hotdog Boulevard circuit on the Geelong waterfront is one of the most iconic cycling circuits in Australia, the event was formally the national championship and has been the scene of some mighty battles over the years. With a bit of niggle between the high profile contenders in this years Bay Classic stage 3 was to be a great spectacle.
Right from the start Graeme Brown put his Urban Hotel team on the front with Koke, Docker, Munro and Windsor all charging out of the gates. However this didn’t stop Baden Cooke and Mat Wilson and then others going on the attack. Urban hotel looked in control till world u23 world champ Jack Bobridge and Johnny Walker joined up with New Zealander Tom Scully after a fall, and then contenders Chris Sutton, Baden Cooke and Greg Henderson went on the attack. With Brown out of contention back in the peloton, his Yellow Series leader jersey was gone, only hope was that his main opponents didn’t place to highly in the stage.
The duel Olympian even more frustrated when he and the peloton where ordered off the course when they where lapped by the Breakaway group, his animated protest earning him a fine from the comassaires. With both Windsor and Munro both still in contention for Urban their was still plenty of action in the remaining laps, Walker attacked the front tri and Koen de Kort got clear of the chase bunch with Brown’s Urban Team mates very keen to see the Dutchman stay away. At the finish the front trio sprinted it out with Tom Scully and very derserving winner over Walker and Bobridge with Hollands Koen de Kort 4th and Dean Windsor keeping Browns overall chance alive defeating Chris Sutton, Greg Henderson and Mat Goss for 5th, with Joel Pearson and Budget forklifts Douglas Repacholi

STAGE 4:
The big show down for the yellow jersey in the 2010 Jayco Bay classic never really eventuated with Sutton and Henderson joining Baden Cooke, Drapac Porsches Joe Lewis and Budget Forklifts Cam Jennings in the race winning move early in the stage. However there was still plenty of controversy with Brown getting to within metres of the break after plenty of work by his urban team mates only to have a Mazda rider drop out of the front break to allegedly slow Browns chase. At the finish Baden Cooke kicked first and recorded a solid win from Henderson, Sutton third placing allowing him to comfortably win the 2010 Bay Classic Series following in his legendry fathers Gary’s footsteps who won the series 21 years ago. Budget Forklifts Cam Jennings finished 4th making it a nice showing for the Western Australian owned team.

7th Jan 2010 - Australian Criterium Championship:
Robbie McEwen appearance at the Ballarat for the National Criterium Title seen a huge crowd flock to the course for the elite mens event. With the defending Champion and a host of other contenders Fly V Australia looked set to play a major role in the event, prolific winner Jono Cantwell and recent USA Champion Ben Kerstin motivated for a good result. Defending 2009 champion Bernie Sulzberger and the former under 23 national champion Dean Windsor went on the attack early both picking up points in the Sprint Championship. But it was a break around the mid way point that would decide the race with Fly V’s Sulzberger, David Kemp and Aaron Kemps breaking clear with Drapac Porcshe pair David Pell and Lachlan Norris, Victorian Chris Steffanoni, Rapha Condor Sharp’s Dean Windsor and recent Launceston International Crit winner Will Clarke.
In a battle of tactics Drapac Porsche went on the attack before Fly V looked to set up former Astana rider Aaron Kemps. In the dash to the line Kemps took the gold from Windsor and Will Clarke taking the Bronze. Windsor rewarded for an aggressive ride taking the Sprint Championship Jersey as well as the national silver medal.
The Womens Championship was dominated by Carly Light who recorded an impressive solo win. Chloe Hosking winning the bunch sprint to take the under 23 women title as well as 2nd overall. Drapac Porsche where very impressive winning the u23 men with Daniel Braunsteins break clear to win, and Tom Palmer winning the sprint for second from Malcolm Rudolph.

10th Jan 2010 - Australian Road Race Championship:
Once every handful of years the early break hangs on for a win, and in 2010 it was the brave men that where rewarded when a group that jumped clear only about 1 km into the race that fought out the finish. Raced in very hot conditions everyone expected that the leaders would blow up and the big hitters would fight out the finish, but as the laps ticked down and Damian Turner continued to drive the break over the mountain every lap it became clear that the chases just couldn’t bring
back the early break, which continued to set an amazing pace up front.
With one lap remaining classy Trav Meyer (Garmin) jumped clear of the leading group to solo to a gold medal and the Champions jersey, David Kemp who was aggressive all day winning the Mars Sprinter jersey chased Meyer all the way to the line to take silver, while Local boy Damo Turner ride to take Bronze and the climbers jersey was simply outstanding.
Also outstanding was Ruth Corset in the elite women title riding away from everyone to take the National title form Bridie O'Donnell and German legend Judith Arndt, ex runner Rachel Neylan putting in a great ride to be third Aussie finished in front of Vicki Whitelaw and Amanda Spratt, Dubbo youngster Megan Dunn the leading u23 compeditor.
