Lappers has a crack in Singapore Pro Crit– March 2010 Ben Kersten wins OCBC Cycle Singapore Organisers of the OCBC Cycle Singapore are proving that there is huge growth potential in cycling in the circuit race format with the 2010 again breaking participation records with thousands turning up for a variety of cycling challenges and to watch the Professional Criterium. Australia continued it excellent record in the Professional Criterium with Fly V’s Ben Kersten defeating Italian sprinters Michelle Merlo (Footon Servetto) and Angelo Furlan (Lampre) with Rapha Condor Sharp’s Zac Dempster just missing the podium in 4th after team mate Darren Lapthorne looked a great chance of stealing the win after breaking away in the event and getting caught in the shadows of the line. After wins in the US Pro Crit and the Cronulla International GP, the Singapore win certainly establishes Kersten as a roadie, after the former record breaking 1000m Track Champion opted to move away from the boards after the Athens Olympics. Certainly Kersten’s pure power surprised last years Tour of Britain stage winner Michelle Merlo and veteran sprinter Angelo Furlan who opted for a later start to the season in Singapore after normally racing Qatar where he has a solid record. While Zac Dempster, aware of Kerstens speed was happy with he and Rapha Condor Sharp team mate Kristian House both finishing in the top 10 after Lapthorne’s efforts earlier combining with Gus Morton & Jessie Anthony. After a good week where Australia’s Drapac Porsche’s Peter McDonald won the KOM Jersey and Stu Shaw the final stage of the Tour of Langkawi, new signing Michael Phelan recorded a solid finish at 12th while National Champions Scott Law (14th) and Garmin’s Travis Meyer (17th) both finish in the top twenty with another of the Drapac Porsche rider Joe Lewis (18th). New Australia National series team Bike Bug have made a nice start with Sydney’s Alex Malone winning the Super Challenge support event breaking clear of the pack with Robert Hensby and finishing strongly to take the win. Kristian House does extra in Singapore– March 2010 OCBC Cycle Singapore British National Road Race Champion, Kristian House showed on day one of the OCBC Cycle Singapore that going to an event is often more than the racing. With the professional race on Day 2 the first day of racing was mostly about the junior events and the event’s official Charities, and with thousands of dollars going to Cancer Research and deserving Children. With well over 500 children involved in the race events, plus the Cycle of Hope encouraging the plight and courage of cancer survivors, Rapha Condor Sharp’s Kristian House added his support to the day officiating at some of the junior events. Kristian at the finish of the 10-12 year old which was won by Johannes Beitzel from Ryanud Deen and Pei Song, another future star to keep an eye on was Amelia Lai who won the 2 to 3 years race in a flying 23 seconds and could be an early favourite for the 2026 junior worlds. Harrison Carter looks very strong at the moment and will go to the State Championships as the number 1 seed in the U15 Individual Pursuit title. 2010 Tour de Taiwan– March 2010-03-14 Interesting start to this years Tour de Taiwan Stage 1 – the traditional tour de Taiwan start at the Love River Crit makes way for a new 140km stage, which climbs up to Mt. Alishan National Park for the finish. Competitors have descended down the Alishan climb in the past, but this year will tackle the asect in the final stages of Day 1, thus bring the GC Cotenders to the top in stage 1 of the 2010 tour. The wind swept salt flats at Chiayi are again part of the tour’s second stage, although little climbing the flattish stage with the spectatular finish infront of the Singang Fengtian Temple will see plenty of aggressive cycling action. Stage 3 at the giant Baguashan Buddha has been a very important stage in the past as teams battle for position on the final paved climb to the finish. The Taichung 4th stage has been a criterium or Kermese in past, and although on a new course in 2010 it still is a circuit race, with the Tour racing around a 10km course. The 5th stage at Miaoli County is a new stage with an interesting climb located in the second half of the course. Although unseen and in a fairly flat area this stage is expected to also sort out the climbers, making the 2010 tour a change from recent Tour de Taiwan where the sprinters got plenty of chances to display their talents. The penultimate stage at Taipei County has seen the GC candidates battle it out on some small but significant accents. While the traditional finish in the street below the might Taipei 101 building has seen the tour come to an exciting end as the team battle for time bonuses............................
