Polish Team Preview: Tour De Taiwan UCI 2.2, 14th – 20th March 2010
Poland strong again in 2010 Tour de Taiwan
Polish Pro Continental team Polsat Polkowice look very keen to defend their win in last years Tour de Taiwan with a strong line up in the 2010 event. Racing as Merida in Chinese Taipei the Polish team has opted for more depth in the 2010 team line-up, after tour organisers added more climbing to this years tour.
Former Polish National Champion Tomasz Marczynski looks fit and ready to go after an impressive top ten performance in last weeks Tour of Murcia against many of the world leading tour riders. Racing against the likes of Lance Armstrong and Andreas Klöden and placegetters Frantisek Rabon, Denis Menchov and Bradley Wiggins, Marczynski top ten on general classification would stamp him the rider to watch at Taiwan.
Bartlomiej Matysiak returns to Taiwan after being one of Merida key riders in the early stages last year, Matysiak has good criterium form in Poland but can also ride as a General Classification rider finishing second in the Tour du Maroc last year. Also finishing with a solid position on General Classification in the Maroc Tour last year was former Polish U23 Nationals Runner up Adrian Honkisz. While both Jaroslaw Rebiewski and Tomasz Smolen have plenty of experience and both know now to finish off in a race, with Rebiewski winning the Tyskie Criterium last season and Smolen recording a number of wins in Poland last year plus has also a number of Amateur wins in France in the past.

Taiwan Course Preview: Tour De Taiwan UCI 2.2, 14th – 20th March 2010
Interesting start to this years Tour de Taiwan
Stage 1 – the traditional tour de Taiwan start at the Love River Crit makes way for a new 140km stage, which climbs up to Mt. Alishan National Park for the finish. Competitors have descended down the Alishan climb in the past, but this year will tackle the asect in the final stages of Day 1, thus bring the GC Cotenders to the top in stage 1 of the 2010 tour.
The wind swept salt flats at Chiayi are again part of the tour’s second stage, although little climbing the flattish stage with the spectatular finish infront of the Singang Fengtian Temple will see plenty of aggressive cycling action.
Stage 3 at the giant Baguashan Buddha has been a very important stage in the past as teams battle for position on the final paved climb to the finish. The Taichung 4th stage has been a criterium or Kermese in past, and although on a new course in 2010 it still is a circuit race, with the Tour racing around a 10km course.
The 5th stage at Miaoli County is a new stage with an interesting climb located in the second half of the course. Although unseen and in a fairly flat area this stage is expected to also sort out the climbers, making the 2010 tour a change from recent Tour de Taiwan where the sprinters got plenty of chances to display their talents.
The penultimate stage at Taipei County has seen the GC candidates battle it out on some small but significant accents. While the traditional finish in the street below the might Taipei 101 building has seen the tour come to an exciting end as the team battle for time bonuses.

New Start to 2010 Tour: Tour De Taiwan UCI 2.2, 14th – 20th March 2010
Changing face of Kaohsiung see a new start to the 2010 Tour de Taiwan
The success of the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung last year has added a new dimension to the hard working city that is more famous for its busy port and industry than its recreation and tourist venues.
Kaohsiung officially was named the host of the international class multi-sport event in 2004 by the International World Games Association (IWGA), and since then has been polishing itself up for the games which last year brought over 30 non Olympic Sports to the city for to decide their world standings.
Since then the busy port city has a new tourist focus and its not surprising that the 2010 Tour de Taiwan will start at the World Games Stadium in Kaohsiung and then race to the famous Tourist area of Mt Ali National Scenic Area.
This will be quite a change from the Tradition Love River Criterium, with teams gambling on whether a break will stick or not with the climbing at the end on the stage. The Polish “Polsat Polkowice – Merida” team tend to race calmly in the early stages but will probably be keen to put a lower profile GC rider in the move to cover all bases. The Kaohsiung Stage opens the 2010 Tour de Taiwan on Sunday 14/03/2010.

Giant Buddah returns in 2010

Taiwan Teams Preview: Tour De Taiwan UCI 2.2, 14th – 20th March 2010
Defending champs Merida Europe are back in 2010 Tour de Taiwan after one of the closest finishes in UCI Continental event history in 2009. This year there is plenty of international interest with teams from around the world including strong contingents from Great Britain, USA, Australia, Kazakhstan, Japan, Korea, Armenia, Indonesia, Poland plus a number of local teams from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Frankie Andreu’s American Continental team KENDA Pro Cycling are having their first visit to Taiwan and will push last year’s winners. Both Brazilian Stefano Barberi (3rd Pennsylvania) and Philip Gaimon (2nd Jersey tour) can climb, while in the sprints Chad Hartley is a former American Track Champion and Jacob Rytlewski finished top 5 in this years USA Crit Championships. Backed by former Cyclo crosser Jonathan Sundt the USA team looks well balanced.
After a great season on the Asian circuit in 2009, legend Jaan Kirsipuu will make sure CKT Tmit will be well represented in the bunch sprints in the 2010 Tour de Taiwan. Swiss rider Roger Beuchat (Tour of Korea winner last year) and Mart Ojavee who finished 5th in last year’s Estonian road championships will also have CKT Tmit in the overall Classification.
Both Kazakhstan and Seoul where very strong in last years tour with Seon Ho Park certain to be in the stage placing after 2 stage wins in 2009.
Other Asian teams who always have good form at Taiwan include Shimano with Shinri Suzuki suited by the extra climbing in the 2010 tour, AISAN with their Japanese champ Taiji Nishitani and Hong Kong Team with local legend Kam Po Wong. Other continental teams include Bridgestone Anchor, Max Sports and Polygon Sweet Nice lead by Russian Sergey Kudentsov who won stages in both the Indonesian and Java Tour last year.
The Australians have a very high profile at Taiwan with Drapac Porsche having plenty of success over the last few years, this year Genesys will be representing Australia. With sprinter Joel Pearson and climber Nathan Earle plus great workers Nathan Haas and Ben Grenda the Tasmanian based team looks to be covering all the angles in Taiwan. Fifth member William Clarke who just finished third in the Australian Criterium Championship behind former Astana rider Aaron Kemps and Rapha Condor Sharp’s Dean Windsor who possesses all the physical attributes to win in Taiwan. While Great Britain team Rapha Condor whom have just sign electrical giant Sharp as another sponsor would be the highest profile team in this year’s event.

Stage 1 Alishan, 14th March 2010
Rapha Condor Sharp where in the action with Dean Windsor in the main break of the day before being caught with 20km to go where Dean Dowling and Ben Greenwood countered and settled in the lead group on the Climb to Chukou in the Alishan National Scenic Area. There was plenty of action late in the stage with the front of the race splitting up and GIANT Asia’s David MCCANN talking the win. Rapha Condor Sharp’s Dean Dowling riding strongly for a top ten finish.
More Soon.

Stage 2 - Alishan, 14th March 2010
Bridgestone Anchor rider Miyataka Shimizu has upstaged the sprinters winning the Chiayi stage at 2010 Tour de Taiwan. The Japanese rider followed former Track World Champ Kam Po Wong in the approach to the finish and jumped past the Hong Kong legend on the line to steal the win in front of the sprinting Peloton.
Not really known as a pure sprinter, Shimizu is a well performed Japanese cyclist having finished run up to Aussie Livestrong rider Tim Roe in a stage at last year’s 2009 Tour of Korea. However he did surprise a few fans by the way he kicked home in the finish at the majestic Fentien Temple, which is a classic back drop to the stage.
Irishmen David McCann retained the overall jersey with his Giant Asia Team on the front controlling things for the whole stage. With a couple of finishing circuits at the end of the stage there was plenty of hype coming up to the sprint, with the teams getting there finishers into position for the dash to the line. However with the temple dominating the sky line the finish seems difficult to judge with sprinters often jumping a bit early, Shimizu timing his sprint to perfection in kicking past Kam Po for victory. Third went to Poland’s Thomas Smolden while Rapha Condor Sharp have 2 riders in the top ten with Graham Briggs and Dean Downing finishing 8th and 9th in the stage.

Stage 3 - Under the watch gaze of the Buddha 17.03.10
Experienced Japanese riders Takashi Miyazawa, Shinri Suzuki and British speedster Dean Downing (Rapha Condor Sharp) have taken the podium position in stage 3 of the Tour de Taiwan in the Changhua. Traditionally the stage that finishes on the climb up to the Giant Baguashan Buddha is an important one for the GC contenders however with Giant Asia’s Dave McCann finishing only 8seconds down with a group of his yellow jersey rivals the stage more signalled the battle looming over the next few days.
Former Asian champions Takashi Miyazawa and Shinri Suzuki (winner of the stage in 2009) knew the importance of bunch position coming around the right-hand corner onto the final climb, (which does include a short cobbled section). Both riders having their Japanese and Shimano teams carting them onto the hill. Likewise top UK team Rapha Condor Sharp got organised and had their full team working for Downing who continues to move up the leader board.
Polish Pro Continental team Polsat Polkowice who are expected to become more active in the next few days featured in the main break of the day, however McCann’s Giant Asia Team kept control of the peloton and the break was caught in the final kilometres of the 136km stage. Although on a different course tomorrow’s Taichung County circuit race stage generally comes down to a bunch sprint with the course format allowing the peloton to keep a close eye on the competition. McCann’s Giant Asia team wound be keen to get a group of non threatening riders off the front to save legs for the more difficult stages to come. With the importance placed on the minor jerseys by some of the Asian teams the Irishman’s team might get some assistance with the chase.

Stage 4 - Taichung County - 18.03.10
Ireland’s Dave McCann celebrated St Patricks day with another yellow jersey at the end of stage 4 of the 2010 tour de Taiwan.
McCann finishing 9th in the bunch sprint behind Japans Takashi Miyazawa who moved to fourth overall after winning 2 stages in 2 days. The stage as it has in the past came down to a bunch sprint with the peloton keeping a close eye on all the attacks during the stage while saving their legs for tomorrow hillier stage.
Stage 5 Miaoli County stage is expecting plenty of action with a new course featuring three climbs. The sold ascent at 97km follow by another at the 114km mark is expected to see the contenders for the overall Classification start to battle.

Stage 5 - Miaoli County (18.03.10)
The big teams rolled their sleeves up for stage 5 of the 2010 Tour de Taiwan, with the 3 categorised climbs and in particular the two cat 1’s late in the stage expected to impact the overall classification. At the end of the 160km it was top class UK team Rapha Condor Sharp winning the stage when speedster Dean Downing powering home for an impressive victory.
The stage win moved Downing, a former British champ, to within 35seconds of overall leader Dave McCann; yet the Giant Asia captain again defended well in the Miaoli County stage and now looks a good chance to wear the Yellow Jersey from stage to finish.
However the team will again be tested tomorrow, as history suggests the hills and the coastal weather in Taipei County made it difficult for the leading team to defend the yellow jersey, with all teams in contention going on the attack.
Another mover up the leader board is American Philip Gaimon (Kenda) who now is second overall only 8 seconds from the lead. While Australian team Genesys had a tough day with a couple of falls including their GC man Will Clarke who fell inside the final 3km of the stage but was credited with the leading bunches time to remain in 3rd position overall.
However it is Takashi Miyazawa (Japan Team) at 14seconds whose excellent sprint form might see a break successful in tomorrow’s Taipei County stage; McCann nervous about all the sprint bonus seconds to come, would see Miyazawa as his main threat for the yellow jersey, and so can’t allow the little Japanese rider the opportunity to sprint for time bonuses.

Stage 6 - Taipei County (19.03.10)
With only 1 stage remaining, the 2010 tour de Taiwan is again going to be a very exciting finish, with Dave McCann holding a 8 second lead over American Philip Gaimon followed by Australian Will Clarke at 11sec and the flying Takashi Miyazawa (Japan) at 14seconds while yesterdays winner Downing is now at 29seconds.
Early race favourite Tomasz Smolen won the stage today with another of the tours favourite in Dean Downing of Rapha Condor Sharp 2nd in front of Takeaki Ayabe who took 3rd time bonuses off Miyazawa. Both the Polish team and Rapha Condor Sharp had 2 riders in the top ten with Dean Windsor 7th for Rapha Condor Sharp, and Bart Matysiak 10th for Polsat Polkowice. This means that there is still plenty of challengers for McCann yellow leaders jersey in tomorrows criterium which is contested at the foot of the former-world largest building Taipei 101.

The 7th day of the 2010 Tour de Taiwan finish in the centre of Taipei with a circuit race at the foot of the famous Taipei 101 (formally the world highest building). In a battle of tactics Malaysia’s Rizuan Zainal Zainal jumped clear on the final lap of the race with Shinichi Fukushima (Geumsan Ginseng) to steal the top 2 placings from Australia’s Dean Windsor (Rapha Condor Sharp) who flashed home for 3rd in the stage. Irishman David McCann of Giant Asia finishing 14th in the stage, which was good enough to win the overall Category.
